Complete Home Management
For the household that already runs on ten people.
Every large household is a small business. Most are run by somebody who never applied for the job.
A home at this level runs six to ten people and vendors. A maid, a cook, a driver, a nanny, a gardener, a tutor, the plumber who only answers on Tuesdays. That is an operation, and an operation without a manager does not run itself. It runs on whoever in the family is least able to say no.
Usually that is the woman of the house, unpaid, on top of everything else she does. The house was supposed to be the reward. It became the second job.
The reframe
More help is not the answer.
Every instinct here is to add another pair of hands. Another pair of hands is another person to brief, schedule, chase and replace.
- Hire more staff when the house starts to feel heavy.
- Put one manager over the staff you already have. Ten people without a manager is ten more decisions a day, not fewer.
- Keep the maid, the cook and the driver on separate arrangements, each negotiated by you.
- One point of contact, one rota, one standard, one summary at month end. I hold the vendors. You hold your evenings.
- Settle the school run in the family group chat, every morning.
- A standing plan for school, activities, illness and the days everything changes. It is written down and somebody owns it who is not you.
- Fit the elders' appointments between your own meetings.
- Medication, consultations, physiotherapy and company, run to a calendar instead of to a crisis.
- Book the holiday, then spend it managing the house from abroad.
- Travel planned, and the house run while you are in it and while you are not. Pets fed, staff paid, deliveries taken, nothing waiting for you at the door.
- Pay somebody a percentage of what the household spends.
- Pay a flat fee. A manager earning a percentage is paid more the more you spend, which is the wrong person to hand a budget to.
What I run
Six standing responsibilities.
Staff
Recruitment, vetting, references, rota, payroll and standards, for the maid, the cook, the driver and everyone else. When somebody leaves, replacing them is my problem rather than your week.
Children
School runs, activities, tutors, uniforms, medical appointments, documents and the birthday nobody remembered until Thursday. Held as one plan rather than six reminders.
Elders
Medication schedules, consultations, physiotherapy and companionship, arranged so that dignity is the default and not something that has to be fought for each week.
Pets
Feeding, grooming, vaccinations, the vet, and boarding or in-house care while you travel. Small in the plan, large the day it goes wrong.
The house
Maintenance, repairs, utilities, deliveries, seasonal work and renewals. The things that only announce themselves once they have already become expensive.
Travel
Itineraries, bookings and documents for the family, and the household running to the same standard in your absence as in your presence.
The fee
$1,000per month
One fee, and I never hold your money.
- What it covers
- The management itself. My time, the vendor relationships, the hiring, the rota, and one person accountable for all of it.
- What it does not cover
- Household expenses. Salaries, school fees, repairs, groceries, vet bills and travel are yours and are paid by you, directly.
- Why it works that way
- I am paid to manage, not to spend. Nothing in the arrangement rewards me for a larger budget, and no household money passes through my hands.
- What you see
- Every invoice and every quote, as they arrive. A summary at the end of each month showing what was spent, on what, and what is coming.
