The art of living well

Curating experiences for the discerning few.

I design the life you were told to wait for, I run the household that comes with it, I source what almost nobody can reach, and I build the site your name sits on. Four services, one standard, one person accountable for all of them.

Service I

Personal Life Design

For the family that earns well and still lives small.

Most people are not held back by what they earn. They are held back by a doctrine handed to them at twenty and never questioned since. Save first. Sacrifice now. Live later, if there is a later.

I work the other way round. Keep the capital liquid, keep the options open, and buy the life while you are still young enough to use it.

Afifa Salim Baker
Afifa Salim Baker

The premise

An upper-class life is a mindset before it is an income.

The reframe

Sold to you as goals.

Every one of these takes money you could have deployed and locks it into something you cannot move, cannot borrow against quickly, and cannot leave.

  • The plot

Buy the land first, then build on it when you can afford to.

Lease the address you actually want, this year, and keep the capital earning. A plot you cannot build on is a photograph of a decision, not an asset.

  • The car

Buy the car outright. Loans are for people who cannot manage money.

Use the car. Let the manufacturer carry the depreciation and the resale risk, and put the difference where it compounds.

  • The wedding

One wedding, one fortune, one lifetime of recovering from it.

Spend on the marriage. Do not spend on the audience. The guest list is the single largest transfer of wealth out of a family and it buys nothing that lasts the week.

  • The horizon

Save for thirty years so you can live for the last ten.

Raise what comes in rather than shrinking what goes out. There is a floor under how little you can spend and no ceiling over how much you can earn.

  • Security

Property is security. Land never falls.

Cover is security. Property is a position, and an illiquid one. Confusing the two is the most expensive mistake in the doctrine.

  • The school

Wait until the children are older to move them to a better school.

Start at the standard you intend to finish at. The years you wait are the years that set the accent, the network and the expectations.

The work

Five things I take off your hands.

  • 01

    Residence

I place families in the apartments and villas they had assumed were years away, on lease structures that often cost less each month than the loan they were about to sign. Sourcing, negotiation and the paperwork are mine.

  • 02

    Education

International curriculum from the first year rather than the year it becomes affordable. Shortlisting, assessment preparation, application and fee structuring, planned across the whole school career instead of one admission cycle.

  • 03

    Mobility

Premium cars used rather than owned. Lease, subscription and buy-back structures put you in the car this year and keep the depreciation on somebody else's book.

  • 04

    Earning

Every hour spent economising is an hour not spent earning. I audit where the income actually comes from and where the week actually goes, then rebuild the second around the first.

  • 05

    Protection

Term cover, health cover and liquid instruments carry the risk a property was never carrying. This is the one part of the old doctrine worth keeping, and it is usually the part done worst.

  • Enquire about life design

The framework

Three horizons.

The work compounds. A longer horizon buys depth rather than volume, so it is sold by the year rather than by the task.

Service II

Complete Home Management

For the household that already runs on ten people.

Every large household is a small business. Most are run by somebody who never applied for the job.

A home at this level runs six to ten people and vendors. A maid, a cook, a driver, a nanny, a gardener, a tutor, the plumber who only answers on Tuesdays. That is an operation, and an operation without a manager does not run itself. It runs on whoever in the family is least able to say no.

Usually that is the woman of the house, unpaid, on top of everything else she does. The house was supposed to be the reward. It became the second job.

Afifa Salim Baker

The reframe

More help is not the answer.

Every instinct here is to add another pair of hands. Another pair of hands is another person to brief, schedule, chase and replace.

Hire more staff when the house starts to feel heavy.
Put one manager over the staff you already have. Ten people without a manager is ten more decisions a day, not fewer.
Keep the maid, the cook and the driver on separate arrangements, each negotiated by you.
One point of contact, one rota, one standard, one summary at month end. I hold the vendors. You hold your evenings.
Settle the school run in the family group chat, every morning.
A standing plan for school, activities, illness and the days everything changes. It is written down and somebody owns it who is not you.
Fit the elders' appointments between your own meetings.
Medication, consultations, physiotherapy and company, run to a calendar instead of to a crisis.
Book the holiday, then spend it managing the house from abroad.
Travel planned, and the house run while you are in it and while you are not. Pets fed, staff paid, deliveries taken, nothing waiting for you at the door.
Pay somebody a percentage of what the household spends.
Pay a flat fee. A manager earning a percentage is paid more the more you spend, which is the wrong person to hand a budget to.

What I run

Six standing responsibilities.

  • Staff

Recruitment, vetting, references, rota, payroll and standards, for the maid, the cook, the driver and everyone else. When somebody leaves, replacing them is my problem rather than your week.

  • Children

School runs, activities, tutors, uniforms, medical appointments, documents and the birthday nobody remembered until Thursday. Held as one plan rather than six reminders.

  • Elders

Medication schedules, consultations, physiotherapy and companionship, arranged so that dignity is the default and not something that has to be fought for each week.

  • Pets

Feeding, grooming, vaccinations, the vet, and boarding or in-house care while you travel. Small in the plan, large the day it goes wrong.

  • The house

Maintenance, repairs, utilities, deliveries, seasonal work and renewals. The things that only announce themselves once they have already become expensive.

  • Travel

Itineraries, bookings and documents for the family, and the household running to the same standard in your absence as in your presence.

The fee

$1,000per month

One fee, and I never hold your money.

What it covers
The management itself. My time, the vendor relationships, the hiring, the rota, and one person accountable for all of it.
What it does not cover
Household expenses. Salaries, school fees, repairs, groceries, vet bills and travel are yours and are paid by you, directly.
Why it works that way
I am paid to manage, not to spend. Nothing in the arrangement rewards me for a larger budget, and no household money passes through my hands.
What you see
Every invoice and every quote, as they arrive. A summary at the end of each month showing what was spent, on what, and what is coming.

Service III

Rare Luxury Acquisition

For the collector who has stopped shopping.

Every counter sells you what it already owns. I start from what you asked for.

A boutique is an inventory business. Somebody bought those stones months ago, on their judgement and their budget, and the job of the room is to move them. Whatever you walk out with is a choice made from another person's decisions.

I work the other way round. The brief comes first. Colour, cut, carat, origin, the piece it is going to become and the number it has to stay under. Then I go and find it, wherever it is and however long that takes.

The reframe

Sourcing is not shopping.

The difference is not service or surroundings. It is the order the decisions are made in, and who is carrying the stock.

Write the brief first, then wait for the right stone. It appears on its own schedule rather than on a shopping trip's, and waiting is the service.
At a counterChoose from what is in the case this season.
Buy nearer the source. At this level the margin avoided is not a discount, it is a different order of number.
At a counterPay the retail margin, and the rent on the room you are standing in.
Independent certification verified before any money moves, and provenance documented from origin rather than from the last owner.
At a counterTrust the certificate that came in the box.
Buy where the stone is. Antwerp, Dubai, Johannesburg, Jaipur, or an estate sale that never advertised.
At a counterBuy where the family has always bought.
Own a documented thing. Beauty is why you want it. Documentation is what makes it insurable, transferable and worth what you paid.
At a counterOwn a beautiful thing.
Tell me what it is for. A stone bought for a daughter's wedding and a stone bought to hold value are not the same stone, and no showroom will say so.
At a counterAsk the shop what would suit you.

The work

Brief to vault.

  1. 01

    The brief

Colour, cut, carat, clarity, origin, the setting it is destined for, the ceiling it has to stay under and the date it has to exist by. Written down, because a vague brief buys a vague stone.

  2. 02

    The search

International dealers, cutters, auction houses and private estates. Most of what I look at never reaches a shop window, and most of what I look at is refused.

  3. 03

    Verification

Independent laboratory certification, provenance and valuation, obtained before money moves rather than after. A stone without a paper trail is a decoration.

  4. 04

    Acquisition

Negotiation, terms, currency and transfer. I hold no stock, so nothing in the arrangement pushes a particular stone toward you.

  5. 05

    Commission

The stone made into the piece, with a maker chosen for that stone rather than a house chosen for its name. From sketch through wax to setting.

  6. 06

    Custody

Transport, vaulting, insurance and the documentation that makes cover possible at all. The part everybody forgets until the year they need it.

How it works

I hold no stock.

Which means there is nothing I need you to buy, and no stone whose sale suits me more than another's.

The fee
Quoted against the brief, never off a list. What I charge depends on what you are asking me to find, how rare it is and how far I have to go for it, so the number arrives after the brief and not before it.
The engagement
Agreed against the brief before the search begins, so the cost of the work is known at the point you commission it rather than at the point you commit to a stone.
The refusal
If the brief cannot be met at the number, I say so and the search stops. A stone bought to close an engagement is the one thing this service exists to avoid.
What you see
Every certificate, every valuation and every quoted price as it arrives, alongside what was rejected and why.

Service IV

Personal Website Management

For anyone whose own name is the business.

You are reading the sample.

This site was designed, built and is run by my team. So are the others below. There is no portfolio page to visit, because the work is the thing you are already looking at, on the device you are already holding.

A personal site is infrastructure rather than a brochure. It has to be built well once and then actually run, which is the part almost nobody sells you.

Afifa Salim Baker

The reframe

A profile is not a presence.

Most professionals have a page somewhere. Very few own the address, the audience or the enquiries that arrive through it.

A LinkedIn profile, and a link in the Instagram bio.
Your own address. A platform can change its rules, its layout and its reach without asking you, and everything you built there leaves with it.
A template, filled in.
A design drawn from the person. A template makes you look like everyone else who bought it, which is the exact opposite of the point of a personal site.
Built once, in a good year, and never touched since.
Run continuously. A site that has not changed in two years says more about you than any sentence on it does.
One freelancer, who eventually stops answering.
A team, so the person who built it is not the only person who understands it.
Enquiries arriving through a third-party form service.
Enquiries landing in your own database, on your own domain, where nobody else's free tier decides how long you keep them.
Calling somebody every time a paragraph needs changing.
Your own admin. Write the post, change the price, upload the photograph, publish. No invoice, no waiting, no thread.

What is included

Built, then kept.

  • Design

Drawn from the person rather than from a theme. Typography, palette and photography direction, including telling you what to shoot and how.

  • Build

Fast, accessible and search-legible from the first commit. Not a page builder, and not something that needs rebuilding the moment it grows.

  • Your admin

A private area to publish, edit, upload and read enquiries. The whole point is that ordinary changes never require us.

  • Search

Metadata, sitemap, structured data and the crawler rules that decide whether your name is quoted in an AI answer or missed entirely.

  • Enquiries

A form that validates, resists bots and writes to a database you own, with the submissions visible to you and nobody else.

  • Care

Hosting, certificates, backups, updates, uptime and the small changes that keep arriving. This is the part that is a service rather than a project.

What it costs

Three ways in.

  • Beginner$100To build

For a name that does not have a site yet, and needs one that works before it needs one that is elaborate.

  • Professional$500To build

For a practice that is already being looked up before it is called, and is being judged on what turns up.

  • Principal$1,000To build

For the person whose own name is the business, built and run the way this site was.

Running it afterwards is quoted separately, against what the site actually needs rather than against a tier.

The philosophy

Silent Opulence

I stopped measuring a life by what it displays. What I look for is the house that runs without being managed, the stone with a paper trail behind it, the week that needed no rescuing. None of it announces itself, and all of it costs more than the version that does.

So the work is not decoration. I build the parts of a life that keep working when nobody is watching, and then I keep them working. That is what the four services have in common.

Read the journal

How it begins

One conversation, before anything is agreed.

No service on this site starts with a contract. It starts with an hour, in person where that is possible and on a call where it is not, in which you describe the situation and I say plainly whether it is something I can help with.

  1. 01

    The conversation

An hour, at no charge and with nothing to sign. You describe what you are trying to change. I ask the questions that decide whether any of this applies to you.

  2. 02

    The written brief

What I would do, in what order, over what period, at what cost. In writing, so you can read it twice and show it to somebody else before you answer.

  3. 03

    Your decision

Taken in your own time. If the answer is no, the brief is still yours to keep. If I am not the right person for it, I say so in the first hour rather than in the third month.
